Typical evening…

Wednesday was a typical day at work until about 5 p.m.  It was then and there that I suddenly realized that it had been almost two weeks since I had eaten Thai food and even more astounding, almost one week since I had a smoke on my pipe (tobacco of course).  In my fit of urgency and bewilderment at this most daunting realization, I quickly phone my friend Paul McKee, better known to some as the Paublo’s Pickles patron, and told him of my most saddening tale.  He agreed, quite quickly, that an end to this thailess and smokeless streak needed to come.  We arranged to meet at the Thai Garden at 7 with plans to smoke after.  My heart was lightened and joy carried me!

It was a lovely evening, and yes I’m not ashamed to say a lovely evening consisted of two guys enjoying good food, good smokes, good chilly weather, good drinks (Glenfiddich Scotch and Kahula) and most importantly good company.  We talked of economics, socialism, communism, politics, theology, music and women.  It truley was a superb evening and I’m happy to say that it is becoming a typical evening.  Typical not in the aspects that one might assume.  The element that has become typical is the company.  Beer or scotch, food or fire, conversation or silence are nice accents but not necessities; like icing on the cake.  You can take all those things away and still have the main element, a friend you are comfortable being comfortable with.  It truly is a blessing and I thank God on High for my friendship with Paul.  I thank God on High for all my deep, real friendships because I have been blessed to have more than a few.  I take no credit in this, don’t feel that I have some special skill of acquiring friends more than the average Joe.  Frankly, I don’t dwell on the number of good friends I have that often.  Only in times like this where it just hits me that I have been blessed with good friends.  I like these moments because it makes me realize that God delights in giving his children good gifts.  It’s not just the job, house, spouse or children that God delights in giving us.  It’s a good glass of Scotch, a good book, a cozy pair of sweat pants, a song, a sunrise, thai food, a good laugh, good friends to enjoy and be enjoyed by.  It’s all things my friends.  I’m so grateful for these moments because it reminds me that I give thankfulness for these items far too little, yet God continues to love me and bless me.  The mystery of the Gospel…tis so sweet.  Happy Reformation day too!
